About the Akwa Cross Community in Finland
The Akwa Cross Community in Finland brings together people with roots in Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State, two neighboring states in Nigeria’s South–South region.
Historically, both areas were part of the former South-Eastern State before administrative restructuring in the late 20th century.
Today, they maintain close cultural and social ties while nurturing distinct identities shaped by geography, language, and local traditions. Many community members in Finland share family, linguistic, and historical connections that span the two states.
Akwa Ibom and Cross River are home to diverse ethnic groups.
In Akwa Ibom, the Ibibio, Annang, and Oron peoples are prominent, while Cross River includes Efik, Ejagham, Bekwarra, Yakurr, and several other groups.
English serves as the official language in both states, alongside widely spoken local languages such as Ibibio, Annang, Efik, and Ejagham.
Across these communities, hospitality and respect for others are central values. Social life places importance on family networks, community responsibility, and cultural continuity.
Traditional music, dance, storytelling, and cuisine remain important ways of preserving identity and passing knowledge across generations.
Cultural expression is visible in festivals, crafts, and everyday social life.
Akwa Ibom is known for its rich culinary traditions and vibrant performing arts, while Cross River is widely recognized for its festivals and visual culture.
Events such as traditional new-yam celebrations, cultural days, and community gatherings reflect shared heritage and reinforce bonds within and across ethnic groups.
Dress, language, and food play key roles in maintaining identity both at home and in the diaspora.
Both states offer notable natural and cultural attractions.
Cross River is home to coastal landscapes, rainforests, and wildlife conservation areas, including the Cross River National Park and the Obudu mountain resort.
Calabar, the state capital, has historical significance as a former trading port and is known for its annual cultural and tourism events.
Akwa Ibom features Atlantic coastlines, riverine communities, and a growing hospitality sector centered around Uyo, its capital. Beaches, local cuisine, and cultural centers attract visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
Akwa Ibom’s economy includes oil and gas production, agriculture, fisheries, and a growing services sector.
Cross River combines agriculture, trade, tourism, and small-scale manufacturing, with increasing attention to conservation and hospitality.
Both states host universities and colleges that contribute to Nigeria’s academic and professional landscape, producing graduates in fields ranging from engineering and medicine to the arts and public service.
The Akwa Cross Community in Finland exists to maintain cultural connections, support one another, and share this heritage with a wider international audience.
